Lake Tahoe October 2023

 Saturday

Divya had done the drive up, and we stopped at heavenly gondola per Rameez' recommendation from his earlier visit.  Unfortinately, the gondola was closed for the season.

However, the lake was close enough and we got the first view of the expansive Lake Tahoe. Divya did her tiktok selfies while I videographed the lake, and the ducks.

We reached our cabin at Granlibakken Tahoe.  Nestled into nature. Rustic charms slipping into dilapidation. Finding the room was a bit of a challenge. We were at 49B.  Small cozy old room with two queen beds.

After resting for a bit, we went out for dinner to Rosie's cafe nearby.I had ordered Yankee Pot Roast which tasted like "kappa puzhukke". Felt very homely, tasty and filling.  America had become "thani nadan".

This is Rosie's Cafe at Lake Tahoe. American restaurant.

Sunday
Sunday breakfast was at Cafe Zenon, where we had wings and belgian waffles, while watching an old man and an old lady playing golf just outside our window. Wrinkled skin sagged down while the golf clubs swung the white golf balls up in parabolas.
On the opposite side of Rosie's Cafe was a park with lake access. Blue and vast, with nice walkways along the lake.

Kittue enjoyed the swing at the park, and tried to swing as high as he could. After spending some time at the park, I pulled everyone to the Gatekeeper's museum (heritage museum with traditional baskets). Not particularly interesting, but it was right next to the partk we were at. Also, there was access to the lake from the museum as well which was nice.
Eagle falls
The trip was still just warming up, and we decided to get a little action under our belt by visting the Eagle falls.  Niya is the lazy one of the group. We did a short trek to get to the falls.  Walk through the nature felt very nice, and special. There are umpteen opportunities for such short walks near our home but we rarely venture.

After the trek, we crossed the road, and got easy access to the lower falls. Good time with the falls. Relaxed and easy schedule. We decided to have dinner at the restaurant within the campus of our cabin.

We were told that we could have outdoor seating, and so enjoyed our time at the fireplace. The restaurant manager came by and ushered us into the restaurant saying that the food would get too cold outside. The food was nice but a bit expensive which translated as less filling, but that is fine for dinner.

Monday

We have a 10 o clock checkout. Time to pay another visit to Rosie's Cafe before leaving Tahoe. Had New York Steak for breakfast with eggs and toast. Again very nice, tasty and filling.

Vikingsholm castle would be our target for the day. Before starting the trip, we stocked up some wings, and mashed potatoes, and macaroni from SaveMart.  We will carry the food around and eat when there is a need for energy.

While we had anticipated that the Vikingsholm house entry itself would be closed, we had not quite anticipated that the trek to the castle itself would also be closed.  We had parked at Eagle Falls, and this was on the other side of the road. We took in the breathtaking vistas of the lake. Kittu did some creative photography here.

I spoke to the ranger at Vikingholm and he told me that there are no other spots in walking distance, other than the eagle falls. So we decided to drive back home. It was a so-so nice trip so far.  Tallac historic estates surfaced on the way back, and we decided to pay it a visit.

The houses here were closed for the season. That is the reason we had given it the pass initially. The house had so much character to it with all the wood, wood and more wood on it. Kind of like a chocolate house from a fairytale. A nice rustic vibe to the house. Fell in love with it. Took in all the wood charms.

On the back side of the house was Lake Tahoe yet again. Now it was time for the yellow trees and the blue water to mesmerize us. As it was off season, the place hardly had anyone around. So it felt like our own little paradise.
There was a wooden pier further up. I walked to the end, and  looked back to the land. The green of the lake was so stunning, and it made perfect sense why this is called the emerald bay. The play of sunlight under the shallow section of the lake, and the splendid colors of green towards the land, and a mix of deep blue and cyan into the water were so elating.

Super tall pine trees in the expanse of the sand had it's own grandeur. I felt myself dissolve into the overdose of nature around me. Tallac estates was super breathtaking. By now, we were hungry, and had our packed wings and macaroni.

On the way back, the winding roads offered some fun as I switched the steering from my left hand to the right and back as the roads wound back and forth, driving along the rich yellow double lines on the road, stitching the white dashed lines. While there were dangerous stretches where the road is all you saw, there were other portions where you watched the sunlight dance with the terrain and the trees.
